Santa Fe was nothing like I expected.  It is a small, quaint town of about 80,000 nestled 7,000 feet up in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.  No sand.  I spent a couple days exploring the galleries and museums before taking the High Road to Taos.  This road is dotted with old pueblos and churches dating back to the 1700’s.

I happened to be visiting many of these sacred places during the week before Easter so the side of the road was lined with people making pilgrimages through the winding hills.

This was one such church located in Picuris Pueblo and built in the 1770’s.  It is hard to believe that this seemingly simple and delicate structure has stood longer that the lifetime of the country in which it stands.

The best thing about Taos is getting there.  Taos itself is a crunchy snowboard lodge with no snow.  And rigged casinos.  Losing 7 hands of blackjack in a row isn’t normal, especially when holding at 20 three times!

  1. by the way, what are those made from? Looks like fabric or paper mache!

  2. Did you stop and visit the inside of any churches? Meet anyone? Obviously you did not get the angel of gambling to bless your subsequent pursuits. Try to meet the poets as well…..the town is full of them, I am told.
