Three tornadoes tore through a poor part of Minneapolis the day before we arrived and left a trail of destruction one block wide and nearly 20 blocks long.  The area in the tornados path looked like a bomb had gone off.   Trees had been completely uprooted or had had every limb shattered, cars were flattened and nearly every window was broken.  What amazed me was how abruptly the destruction ended.  Once you crossed a street the houses and trees were perfectly intact, not a single branch or window broken.   Many of these people had no insurance and I wondered why these disasters often seemed to take from those who can least afford to have anything taken.  The damage was like nothing I had seen, but the community was united with emergency workers in doing what could be done to spare what was left of the neighborhood.

  1. Agree. It appears that terrible disasters tend to hit the least fortunate (materially) people…except the recent catastrophe in Japan. What do you do if you have only 17 minutes notice? Hope you are paying close attention to weather forecast.
