There was very little information available about the Hawkins and Powers aircraft boneyard in Wyoming, but most information stated it was near the eastern exit of Yellowstone in a small town called Grey Bull Wyoming. The day started with overcast shadows, but as we neared the airfield the rain ceased and the clouds formed massive waves of grays and blues. This sky made for some dramatic backdrops to this lonely expanse of land where old planes come to die. There are no real fences or signs so you are free to roam the boneyard and go inside all of these aged giants. Although there were many larger military aircraft throughout the boneyard I liked this picture because of the expression in the clouds and the Wyoming state emblem painted on the side of the aircraft.

Wow, the clouds are VERY dramatic!
I couldnt stop taking pictures of them!
Is this the only or main graveyard for planes in that area?? I have seen one such place from the air (pointed out by the pilot of our plane). There were hundreds of large planes; including old commerical airliners. Same or different place?
The place you may have seen might have been AMARC in Tucson. I don’t think many airlines fly over this part of the country.
love this! I’m so positive, aren’t I?! 🙂
yes alissa you are!
Really interesting shot, with the lines of the plane wing and cloud fingers both reaching toward the foreground. It makes me think of the tornado skies over the middle part of the country in recent days.
When do we get to see you again? Can’t wait!
Yes, I came across some tornado ravaged parts of MN recently. I will post some of the images. Violent destruction on a scale I have rarely seen.
