Yellowstone had only opened its gates to spring visitors 2 days before we had arrived to there were 10 foot snow drifts lining the sides of the roads from the south entrance from which we entered.  Many of the trails were closed off to hikers so we proceeded further north into the valley where more of the snow had already melted off.  Wildlife was visible in every direction and the preserved environment really gives you a peek into a world that existed many years before western settlement.  The drive through Yellowstone felt like a enormous ecosystem designed to show off every natural habitat local to North America.  These are the Mammoth Hot Springs in North Yellowstone.
