The Salton Sea was made by mistake in the 1900’s when an irrigation damn broke and flooded a dry desert lake bed.  A southern California tourist attraction was formed and quickly became a favorite vacation destination to escape the arid surrounding area.  Unfortunately, the water was stagnant with no outflow so it became an area of rapid environmental change.  This meant increased salinization and fluctuations in the water level.  Eventually the high salt levels made the Sea uninhabitable for many of the fish species and they began to wash up on shore.   Masses of rotting fish made for bad family vacation time and the Salton Sea was abandoned as quickly as it formed..

Now, there is the putrid smell of the dead fish that line the shores permeating the air and much of the area became a ghost town.  Most people have uprooted but a few have stayed behind perhaps in the hopes that the Sea may one day be returned to its heyday.

  1. I’ve had a nearly life long morbid curiosity to see this place…

  2. Yuck. I can almost smell it myself. But love the picture!

  3. Hi bruva,

Eery shot. You’re staying true to your blog’s name.

I hope you continue to have wild and rewarding adventures. Can’t wait to see you and hear about it all when you return.

  4. Language tidbit – salted in Spanish means “salado,” which has a second meaning of “jinxed” or “bringing bad luck” – as in, someone (or, maybe in this case, something) is “salado.”
