I had a full day of parks in Arizona.  The Painted Desert, Canyon De Chelly, The Petrified Forest and I almost passed up on Monument Valley.  I was driving by the turn off and decided to look it up and see how far it was assuming it was quite a distance because it was in Utah.  It turned out it was only 40 miles away and I’m very grateful I didn’t pass up on this spectacular place.

I spend 5 full hours driving the 17 mile route inside the Valley.  It was an amazing sight from every angle.  I’ve noticed that the parks on Navajo land are much more intimate and allow you much more access.  The clouds above popped in right over the butte in the back and gave nice contrast for this photo.

  1. Truly beautiful, brother!

  2. Specutacular shot! Did you see anybody? Was there any other car while you were driving the Valley for five hours? Any green plant? Nature is awesome!

    • There were other cars that became more scarce as you drove further. It’s amazing but there are still many plants and wildlife that have learned to live in these conditions. Nature adapts to the planet while we adapt the planet to ourselves.

  3. It is your behind-your-house neighbor in Washington DC, Kai — Mary Douglas. Just wanted to say that I’m enjoying your photos and comments! This pic is beautiful — there is something about black and white that really works so well sometimes, perhaps the drama, the light and shadow intensity. So nice.

    • Yes, sometimes the sky plays with the light just right and you get rewarded with some very nice contrast! I’m glad you are enjoying the blog. Thanks for your comments!
