My next stop was somewhat out of the way, but I decided it was worth the journey to see the inspiration for some of Georgia O’Keeffe’s most formidable works.  After tiring of city life, O’Keeffe moved to the Southwest and eventually settled in a tiny town called Abiquiu northwest of Santa Fe.  I got to Abiquiu only to realize I had left Abiquiu before I even knew I had been there.  There was only a store and a sign pointing up a mountain.  I looked back and saw this in my rearview.  I U-turned and took this picture but the camera didn’t seem to capture the huge array of colors that peeked out from over the butte.  It’s nice to look forward to the sunset that ends every day.  Chemical sunsets over New Jersey have great color, but these don’t require toxic spew.

  1. Abiquiu is my absolute favorite place to go hiking in new Mexico….especially when it’s raining across the valley

    • I want to see thunder and rain so badly. So does just about everyone in this area. Can you do a rain dance for me?

      • I’ll work on it…it’s gonna take a lot of whiskey I think….
You’re a little early for the epic summer storms…just means you’ll have to go back 🙂

  2. Did you not visit O’Keefe’s house? I vaguely remember that I saw it in Architectural Digest. It was tiny but very unique.

    • I tried to visit her home but the Ghost Ranch was closed the entire week for Easter observation. It is now somewhat of a Christian religious “cult”.
